5th Grade Band Description

Band is open to all 5th graders. All they need to join is an instrument and lesson book.

Band is a class that meets partly during the day and partly after school.  Large group band rehearsal is once a week (Tuesdays) after school from 3:15-4:10 in the Van Allen gym. This includes students who attend Van Allen, Salem, the Christian School and homeschool students.  During large group band classes your child will learn the basics of how to balance and blend with a collective group of musicians and will learn the how to rehearse collaboratively to prepare music for concert performances.

Individual Lessons

Each band member will receive a 15-minute lesson once a week. These individualized lessons take place during the regular school day. During lessons your child will receive more focused attention and technical instruction specific to your child’s instrument that cannot be taught during the full band rehearsal. Lessons contribute greatly to each student’s individual musical achievement and to the performance of the entire ensemble. Lessons are usually in groups of 1-3 students.

Concert Performances

5th grade band will perform four evening concerts. Concerts typically take place in October, December, March and May.
