Why Should I Be in Band?

Jazz Band-1.webp

Mt. Pleasant Has a Long Standing Tradition of Great Bands and Choirs!

The merits of the Mt. Pleasant Music Department are very evident throughout the school, community, and the state. Mt Pleasant has established a proud tradition of outstanding musical organizations, which allow for even greater intellectual growth and development of self-esteem in students.  Being in band has many benefits- a few of which are listed below but don't take my word for it. Watch the video on the left for more information about why other students have been in band and what they most liked about it!

Reasons to be in Band

  • Friends!

Since our bands are usually pretty big- think 60-70 kids- you'll get to meet a lot of friends from the different elementary schools some of whom you might know from dance, sports, church, 4H or other activities.  Even if you don't think you'll know anyone in band, by high school these people will usually be the people you are closest with since you have band together each year!  You'll make new friends!

  • Encourages Teamwork!

In band we work together to play our music as a group for concerts. This teaches teamwork that you'll need to rely on throughout your life!  Unlike some sports, no one sits on the sideline while other people play.  You will always be playing and always be a part of the team!

  • It's Good for Your Brain!

Many, many studies have shown links to how learning an instrument creates new and complex neurological pathways.  I've included some of the research about music and the brain in the area labelled "Links".

  • Developing Leadership Capabilities!

Each band member has a chance to be a leader at some point. Sometimes we have students conduct, lead the band, or even make decisions about what our next step might be in preparing for a concert. Who knows, you might even be raising the next drum major! Being able to lead is a skill that enhances a student's self-esteem and serves them well as adults.

  • Time Management and Self-Discipline!

Students in band and other extra or co-curricular activities have to learn how to manage their time to accomplish the things they need to do on a given day.  With things such as sports practices, dance, 4H or practicing their instrument to do beside just go home and watch Netflix, students stay busy so they have to use their time wisely.  This skill is best learned at this age so they can eventually juggle routines and schedules that get busier as they enter their teenage/adult years.
