Picking an Instrument

I hope that your 5th grader came home excited about one or more of the instruments they were able to hear during the band instrument demonstrations at school!

BAND instruments include the woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments:

Flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone,

trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, and percussion.

Whew! That's a lot to choose from!

At band instrument "testing" during the month of May, students will meet with Miss Westfall to try out their 3 favorite instruments to see which instrument is their best fit. Don't worry, you can't fail this test! They don't have to know anything about the instrument to be naturally good at it!

The most important things to remember about choosing an instrument are:

♫   Students should pick an instrument based on what sounds they liked the best and what they are most excited to play. That may not be the instrument that fits in her backpack or that his best friend is playing, and that’s okay! The instrument your child is most excited about playing is the instrument that will be practiced the most.

♫ Due to how loud the percussion instruments are, there is a limit to the number of students who can play this instrument. It is important to also select a second-choice instrument if your student is considering percussion.  We only allow 6-8 percussionists each year given how extremely loud these instruments are. More than that would be harmful to our students' hearing!

♫   To be considered for percussion, students must take an echo listening test with Miss Westfall to determine if rhythms are easy for them to hear.

Demos

The members of the United States Army Field Band demonstrate each of the instruments played in our 5th grade band plus a few extras!
